Good Sunday afternoon to everyone. I hope readers enjoyed celebrating the Fourth of July this weekend. The summer is flying by, as it always seems to do.
It was a relatively quiet week for Kentucky baseball. The Wildcats hosted Connor Shouse, one of the top available players in the portal, on a visit early in the week. Shouse committed to South Carolina on Saturday, however. On Wednesday, I wrote about Director of Offensive Development Matt Morrowaccepting a full-time role at Indiana. That move had been in the works for a while.
On Friday, Adam Revelette dug into the pitchers Kentucky has added in its portal class. You will come away with a better understanding of each pitcher and what they can bring to the program.
But the lull of the past few weeks will come to an end soon. The MLB draft is set to begin on Saturday, July 11. While we have a general idea of what Kentucky's 2027 team could look like, the draft is where we change the discussion from hypotheticals to actualities. As usual, I'll have an MLB draft guide on Friday with what to watch for and the latest buzz heading into the weekend.
Today's story is on three things I've been thinking about with Kentucky baseball.
With Shouse off the board, one current player became more important
Shouse, an All-Big 12 performer in 2026, was sought after in the portal for his offense. He slashed .353/.431/.595 with 18 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and 66 RBIs for the Red Raiders this past season, making him one of the most productive players available. He would've been a big pickup in that regard, even if his defense is shaky and there's still a chance he could sign professionally.
Derek Terry is the founder of Bat Cats Central, a leading source for Kentucky baseball coverage. Before leaving full-time sportswriting, Derek worked for The Cats' Pause (2017-22) and Cats Illustrated (2015-17), and interned with D1baseball.com.
