Five Kentucky baseball thoughts as summer winds down
Thoughts on Kentucky's player retention, transfer portal class, deep pitching staff and more.
Three members of Kentucky's 2026 class will play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic, plus a rankings update from Perfect Game and news of a new commitment.
On paper, Kentucky's 2026 recruiting class is tracking to be one of the best in recent memory. The Wildcats have 10 commitments to date, and each of them is ranked in the top 500 by Prep Baseball Report.
However, several members of the class are also well regarded by Perfect Game's scouting service. Righthanded pitcher Grayson Willoughby, shortstop Matt Ponatoski, and catcher Carson May were selected to play in the 2025 Perfect Game All-American Classic. Ponatoski and May will play on the East Team, and Willoughby will be on the West Team. The game will be played at Petco Park in San Diego on Aug. 17 at 8 p.m. ET.
Willoughby, who plays at Trinity High School in Louisville, is one of the fast risers of the 2026 class. Unranked when he committed to the Wildcats last year, Willoughby is now ranked in the top 100 by both major scouting services. His fastball has topped out at 96 miles per hour, and he also throws a changeup and slider in the mid-80s. Willoughby was the MVP of the KHSAA state tournament and finished 5-1 with a 1.93 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched.
