The Kentucky baseball team had an intrasquad at Kentucky Proud Park on Friday morning. The offense had a good day with a combined 13 runs between the two teams, and the Blue team came away with a 7-6 win.
There are a few personnel notes to add off the top. Senior outfielder/DH Carson Hansen was out of town for a family wedding and senior outfielder Will Marcy will likely miss the rest of fall practice after suffering a hand injury during the Wildcats' scrimmage against West Virginia on Sunday. He is expected to be swinging a bat again before the players depart for winter break. However, the Wildcats were down two outfielders during the scrimmage, which led to a student manager filling in (admirably, I must say) defensively.
Also of note is that senior catcher Alex Duffey has been a little banged up and has been held out from catching for precautionary reasons. He still hit during the scrimmage, but did not play the field. Junior Tagger Tyson and freshman Owen Jenkins handled the catching responsibilities.
Blue team
SS Tyler Bell – 1-3; double, BB, 2 runs
C Tagger Tyson – 1-3; 2 RBI
1B Hudson Brown – 1-3; 2 RBI
CF Jayce Tharnish – 2-3; double, 2 runs
3B Tyler Cerny – 1-2; 2 runs, BB
DH Alex Duffey – 1-3; double, 2 RBI
RF Ryan Foscolo – 1-3; 1 RBI
2B Michael Gardner – 0-2; 1 BB
Pitchers:
RHP Bryson Treichel: 2 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
LHP Will Coleman: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, BB, 3 Ks
RHP Jack Bennett: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, BB, 2 Ks (Bennett pitched for both teams)
It seems like sophomore outfielder/1B Ryan Schwartz is mentioned as a top performer every time we write a practice report. He's simply having a fantastic fall to this point. Schwartz reached base all four times today. He singled into left field on a liner in his first at-bat, then drew two walks and was also hit by a pitch. Schwartz played first base during Friday's scrimmage. Head coach Nick Mingione told Bat Cats Central on Sunday that Schwartz would soon throw an inning off the mound. That apparently happened during Wednesday's scrimmage. He was up to 92 miles per hour. I'm not sure if this is something we'll continue to see, but the overall versatility is significant.
Senior righthander Jack Bennett had the best day among the pitchers. Of the five pitchers who threw on Friday, Bennett was the only one who kept runs off the board. He struck out two batters and did not allow a hit. He'll be a valuable piece to this pitching staff.
