First things first
Despite the tough results last weekend in terms of wins and losses, each of Kentucky's starting pitchers competed well. Jaxon Jelkin pitched through a two-out mess in the third and more traffic in the fourth on Friday, but settled in and gave the Cats another solid performance (7 IP, 3 ER, 10 K). On Saturday, Nate Harris allowed three consecutive singles in his fifth inning but retired the next three batters to limit the damage to two runs scored. His sixth inning began with a leadoff double and an HBP that ended his day before Ryan Mullan came on to snuff out the Mizzou rally. And on Sunday, Ben Cleaver pitched into the fifth inning for the first time all season and had a “bow your neck” moment to finish the fourth. Like Harris, Cleaver’s fifth inning left something to be desired (BB, error on push bunt, HBP) and the bullpen blipped as well (Mullan walked the first batter he faced and Nile Adcock’s first two batters reached via free passes), but all three starters kept UK in the game over the weekend, which isn’t something you can say about a lot teams at this point in the season.
