Previous player spotlights:
A 6-foot, 185-pound infielder from Evergreen Park, a suburb of Chicago, Lawrence spent the first two years of his career at Illinois State. He appeared in 39 games as a freshman, spending most of his time at third base (30 games played), but also logged innings at second base and right field. Lawrence slashed .319/.376/.471 with 10 doubles, a triple and two home runs in 133 plate appearances.
Lawrence became a full-time starter as a sophomore and split time between shortstop and third base. According to Baseball Reference, he played 35 games at shortstop and 21 games at third base. He raised his batting average (.337), on-base percentage (.399) and OPS (.864) and drove in 48 runs. Lawrence entered the transfer portal following the 2024 season.
When he committed to Kentucky, Lawrence told Bat Cats Central that he was grateful for his time at Illinois State but wanted to challenge himself at a higher level.
“I had a great two years there," Lawrence said. "I really appreciate those coaches taking a chance on me. I was a walk-on there, so I have nothing but good things to say about them. It was a personal decision and I wanted to challenge myself a little more, so I thought entering would be the best option for me. It was a hard decision family wise, especially because I was close to Illinois State. Ultimately, in the end, it was just trying to get a little better and go a little bigger.”
Had Tyler Bell not enrolled at Kentucky, it's possible Lawrence would've spent last fall competing to be the Wildcats' shortstop. However, Lawrence won the second base job in the preseason and was the only Wildcat to appear in all 57 games. But aside from Kyuss Gargett filling in at shortstop against USC Upstate while Bell was out with a leg injury, Kentucky's middle infield duo was the same throughout the season.
Lawrence slashed .322/.394/.451 with 10 doubles and two homers. He was particularly good down the stretch, going 10-21 in the postseason. Lawrence earned Clemson All-Regional Team honors.
“Luke is an absolute grinder and competitor," Kentucky coach Nick Mingione said. "Here’s a guy that basically learns a whole new position and hits in the top of our lineup almost all year long. His toughness is something we absolutely love. His versatility, offensively, is something we love. Whether it’s stealing a base, laying down a bunt, hitting an extra-base hit. I’m still picturing his home run at Georgia. He can do it all. He was really playing as well as anybody on our team at the end of the year. I’m excited to get him back. His leadership this summer has been phenomenal.”
