Will Marcy expected to miss extended time
The Kentucky outfielder was injured during the Wildcats' 9-2 win over Northern Illinois on Tuesday night.
Kentucky center fielder Will Marcy is listed as OUT on the SEC Student-Athlete Availability Report ahead of the Wildcats’ series at Georgia. In speaking with sources around the program, Marcy is expected to be out for an extended period.
The injury, sustained in the Wildcats’ 9-2 victory over Northern Illinois on Tuesday night, could keep Marcy out for the next few months and potentially the rest of the regular season. Marcy was injured while running the bases in the fifth inning on Tuesday night. He crumbled when he reached home plate and needed help from his teammates to reach the dugout.
In addition to Marcy, sophomore infielder Ethan Hindle is also listed as out on Friday. Hindle has served as a DH and third baseman this season and is slashing .294/.517/.647 in 29 plate appearances. Unlike Marcy, Hindle’s injury is not long-term and he could be back before the end of the weekend.
Marcy, a senior from Raleigh, North Carolina, opened the season as Kentucky’s center fielder. He was off to a slow start at the plate, slashing .115/.281/.192 in 26 at-bats. He had been in and out of the lineup but started and hit eighth in Tuesday’s game against the Huskies. Against NIU, Marcy was 1-2 with a single and had reached base courtesy of a hit-by-pitch before his injury. Sophomore outfielder Griffin Cameron replaced Marcy in the sixth inning.
With Marcy out, Kentucky has a few options on how to proceed. Shaun Montoya, a transfer from San Deigo State, has played center field at times this season and could slide back over, allowing junior Carson Hansen or senior James McCoy to play right field. Cameron, a Lexington native who started opening day for the Wildcats in 2024, is a speedster who provides the most defensive upside. He’s only had eight plate appearances this year, but he’s 2-5 with two walks and one sacrifice in those appearances. Cameron went 1-2 with an RBI after replacing Marcy against NIU.
The following guidelines come from the SEC Student-Availability Report:
For basketball and baseball, reports are filed the night before the game, with an update on game day. Players are designated as “available,” “probable,” “questionable,” “doubtful,” or “out” before game day; and as “available,” “game time decision,” or “out” on game day.
