NCAA Tournament watch: Prognosticators believe the Cats are in, but barely

Kentucky will know its postseason fate within the next 24 hours. It will be an anxious wait for the Wildcats as they're firmly on the bubble with a 31-21 overall record and 13-18 mark in SEC games. The selection show is scheduled for noon ET on ESPN2.

D1baseball.com and Baseball America produced updated bracketology pieces on Sunday morning. Both sites currently project Kentucky to make the field, but just barely. D1Baseball has the Cats as the No. 63 overall seed, and Baseball America projects them as the last team in.

"The argument against Kentucky is complicated," Jacob Rudner of Baseball America wrote. "On one hand, the Wildcats were never swept all season, spent much of the year without at least one key contributor due to injury and still managed to go 6-6 against projected regional hosts. They also play in the toughest conference in the country, and historically, 13 SEC wins has effectively served as the benchmark for tournament inclusion. No 13-win SEC team has missed the field since 2022."

Rudner noted that Kentucky lost eight of 10 SEC series and finished with a losing Quad-1 record (7-8). Still, Rudner wrote that Baseball America's staff thought "Kentucky’s profile was strong enough to withstand the combination of stolen bids and late pushes from other bubble contenders."

As of Sunday afternoon, Kentucky's RPI sits at 37. Its DSR and KPI ranking comes in at No. 30.

Let's rehash the pros and cons of Kentucky's resume.

Pros:

  • Strong metrics relative to the bubble. As listed above, Kentucky's overall metrics stack up well against other bubble teams. Of the other teams listed as either First Four In or First Four Out between Baseball America and D1baseball.com (TCU, ECU, NC State, Troy, Mercer, Pittsburgh, Texas State, Michigan), Kentucky is the only program ranked in the 30s in each of the RPI, KPI and DSR. ECU, which plays in the AAC championship today, is close to this mark as it is ranked in the 30s in DSR and KPI, but currently has an RPI of 41. The Wildcats have the highest KPI and DSR ranking of any of the bubble teams and their RPI trails only Mercer (28th) and Troy (34th), though it's much higher in DSR and KPI than those two programs.
  • High quality wins. Both websites have Alabama, Auburn and Florida as national hosts (top-8 seeds). Kentucky went 5-4 against that group and owns a series sweep over the Crimson Tide. In addition, UK went 1-2 against Arkansas, which is now projected to be a regional host. With The Citadel clinching the auto-bid in the Southern Conference and St. John's clinching the auto-bid in the Big East, Kentucky went 15-9 against teams that will reach the NCAA Tournament.

Cons:

  • Bad optics. Anyone who believes Kentucky should not be in the NCAA Tournament is going to point to the Cats only winning two SEC series, especially when they avoided the top three teams (Georgia, Texas and Texas A&M) in the league. The Wildcats also finished 13th in the SEC. Kentucky was never swept, but there's no denying it left a lot to be desired in certain series. Which brings us to the next point...
  • Poor performance against non-tournament teams. Building off the last bullet, Kentucky lost a series to every team in the league that will not make the NCAA Tournament. Vanderbilt was somewhat considered a bubble team earlier in the week, though it was always a long shot to get in with such bad metrics. The Commodores are no longer in the conversation to reach the tournament, nor are LSU, South Carolina and Missouri. Kentucky went 4-9 against this grouping. The LSU series ended up being a Quad-2, as did the SEC Tournament loss to Vandy, but the other nine games were Quad-3 or Quad-4. There's probably not a conversation to be had at all if Kentucky won just one more game out of this group. If the Cats miss the tournament, the lack of series wins and rough performance against the bottom of the league will likely be the committee's explanation.
