Kentucky scored five runs in the top of the 7th inning to mount a comeback and defeat West Virginia 9-8 in the first portion of the scrimmage at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio. West Virginia's pitching staff walked six batters and hit one more in the final frame, helping the Wildcats score eight runs over the final two innings.
Jayce Tharnish hit a solo home run and drove in two runs while drawing two walks in the leadoff spot. Shortstop Tyler Bell also drove in two runs on a double in the sixth inning.
Kentucky used Jaxon Jelkin, Jackson Soucie, Nile Adcock and Ira Austin on the mound. Jelkin gave up three runs but was pumping upper-90s fastballs and struck out four batters. Soucie also gave up three runs but limited the damage in one inning, recording three consecutive outs to strand runners and second and third.
